ASPCA Month: Keeping Your Dog Healthy

Here at Biolife, we not only care about you and your health, but also we are very concerned about the wellbeing of your four legged companions. We just love pets! Having said that, we have decided to kick off this month with a post about healthy pets. This post is filled with general tips and a healthy checklist for keeping your K9 best friend in tiptop shape.

Body Condition
Every month you should be performing a regular body condition check on your dog to search for any abnormalities. Run your hands over your dog and you should be able to feel their ribs with only a thin layer of fat covering it. The belly of the dog should slope upwards from the chest creating an hourglass figure when viewed from a bird’s eye view.

Ears
Be sure to clean your dog’s ears regularly. They should be without any green waxy discharge, redness or itchiness. Also be aware if any foul odors are omitted from the ears. Long eared dogs benefit best from regular ear cleaning because more often then not things may get caught in them and hinder the dogs keenest sense.

Eyes
Take note of your dog’s eyes, if any runniness or redness appears your dog may very well be ill. Eyes should always be bright and clear, if any signs of light sensitivity occur be sure to take them to a vet for a proper exam.

Nose
Not all dogs have wet snouts; so don’t assume if they are dry and warm that your dog is sick. First, check for is any crusting or thick discharge coming out of the nose before rushing off to the vet just because you don’t have a wet noised dog.

Mouth
Be very conscious of your dogs breath, while it may be common knowledge that dogs have foul breaths, there may be an underlying cause, potentially a digestive or kidney problem. It is suggested that you regularly care for dog’s teeth, whether it be brushing them or providing them with dental treats to rid them of plaque and other bacterial growths that may cause tooth decay.

Checking the above-mentioned conditions regularly will not only keep you conscious of your dog’s wellbeing but also alert you of any serious issues that may suddenly arise. By keeping track of your dog’s health you can ensure a happy healthy life for you and your pal. For more tips like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter. How to Prepare for Spring Weather

Spring is here at our New York BioLife offices; everyone has a skip in their step and a smile on their faces. With the temperatures approaching the 50’s (a number we haven’t seen in months) and we can’t help but embrace it with open arms. So with spring right around the corner, we want to help you ready yourself for the season. With the change of the season comes a change in our bodies and environment, so we compiled a list to help you thwart off any health concerns for the warmer months.

See a doctor
Prepare yourself for the allergy season and update your allergy medicine. We also recommend considering an allergy test to check for the most common allergies instead of finding out you are allergic the hard way.

Keep your windows and doors shut
Close your windows and doors because even though you love that fresh spring breeze, allergens seep through the mesh screen of windows and doors. While it is a bit pricier, consider running your A/C on low earlier on in the season to get a cool breeze running through your home.

Time your outdoors activities
Try to avoid spending time outdoors in the early morning because pollen counts tend to be higher in the morning. Also, be sure to take your antihistamines at least two hours before going out.

Prep your home for natural disasters
While we may think that the worst of it is over with snowstorms behind us, the chance of hurricanes and tornados in some parts of the country are still very possible so be sure to prepare your home for the potential of storms. Some ways to prepare are to turn off the electricity and propane to avoid a fire and board up your windows to prevent debris from breaking them.

Set up your garden
The most exciting thing to see in the spring is the blossoming of spring flowers, but be careful about how early you plant them because just one frosty night can ruin them for the rest of the season. Be sure to pick the right time to plant them and if frost does occur be sure to cover them as protection against frigid nights.

With spring almost in full swing, we hope you take to our tips for a healthy and happy season! Couples in Love SYNC Up
Recent research has determined that romantic couples in love share the same paced heartbeat. The study used couples who sat across from one another and mirrored the others movements. Each set of partners seemed to present not only similar heartbeats but also breathing patterns. We can only assume that it’s from all those late night cuddle sessions when couples heartbeats sync up.

Sex is a Calorie Burner
So we have all heard the rumors and turns out they are true! For every six minutes, you burn around 21 calories according to the New England Journal of medicine. Plus every minute of your make out session you burn three calories...so go ahead home and stay up all night doing whatever it is you may do.

Men Can’t Handle Housework
For all our all male readers, rejoice and be sure to run home and show this to your honey because guess what? It has been proven through research that men who do non-traditional household chores are having less sex.

Morning Kisses Count
Committed couples that kiss in the morning have been found to be happier and healthier then others. In fact, those who start their mornings every day with a kiss have been proven to live 5 years longer then those who don’t. The reason? Its actually pretty simple…kissing couples start their day with a positive attitude!

Swapping Spit, Less Sick
A recent study found that college students having sex once or twice a week had 30 percent higher levels of immunoglobin, which protects you from the cold and flu.

Tips for Staying Mentally Fit

Our wellbeing is not just based on our physical appearance. So much of our fitness relies on our mental welfare. Our brains are in fact muscles and require regular exercise to be sure it is working at its best capacity. By keeping your brain in top shape you are not only keeping on top of your game but also warding off early signs of Alzheimer’s and slow the progression of the disease.

Exercise
Interestingly enough, physical exercise releases neurotransmitters into your body increasing your general mood. Additionally, a change in your exercise routine carves out new patterns in your brain and helps relieve stress.

Actively Do Puzzles
Board games and puzzles such as crosswords, word searches and logic puzzles all provide mental stimulation to sharpen reasoning and language skills.

Have a New Experience
By learning something new later in life, whether it is a new language or new hobby, you are challenging your brain. By challenging your brain you are strengthening it.

Socialize
By spending time with friends you are promoting your mood. By spending as little as 10 minutes a day can boost your memory and test scores. Quick 10 minute chats are proven to be as successful as spending the same amount of time on a crossword puzzle.

Keep Your Blood Pressure Low
High blood pressure damages your blood vessels, which when damaged enough causes strokes, and thus contributes to mental decline.

Brain Foods
When eating veggies, fruits and fish, brain function is protected by these nutrient and omega-3 rich foods.

Switch Things Up
Similar to having a new experience, if you change your routine it challenges your mind to keep up. Next time you go out for a walk around the block clockwise, turn it into a jog or powerwalk. Little changes still prove stimulating for your brain.

Herbal Treatments vs. Western Medicine

Here at BioLife, we believe natural is better and we offer a large line of products designed for a better for a better healthier you! But its not only us who believe natural is healthier, just check out our list of top 5 reasons health supplements are the way to go:

1. Chemical-Free
Health supplements are chemical-free and created from naturally found products as opposed to western medicine that seems to constantly have a medical product recalled every other week.

2. Herbal Basis
Natural medicines are either extracted from or manufactured entirely of plants that host various natural compounds. The effects of these herbal-based supplements are much more gentle and tend to not have extreme side effects unlike western medication.

3. That Extra Boost
Supplements don’t only provide a natural remedy but can be used to give you that extra boost or balance out your well being something you can’t do with a prescription pill.

4. Single Chemical Drug
Western medication is chemically engineered to treat one condition but if prescribed along with other drugs by other doctors the side effects can be detrimental.

5. Natural Supply of Vitamins
Unlike western medicine, vitamins are found naturally in plant-based products and are not chemically altered allowing for a natural supply of vitamins as opposed to the forced mass compilation of vitamins so often found in “multi-vitamins”.

Best Fitness Apps Uncovered

Sometimes you have to take your health and fitness outside the world of healthy eating and make it physical! Today it is beyond easy to track and keep up with your fitness and diet routine through phone applications that design your workout for you! We love how easy it has become to stay in shape we no longer have an excuse to avoid the gym. A lot of these apps essentially provide a moving gym, tracking your daily activity and logging it as a calorie-burning workout. With so many options out there, we decided to take it upon ourselves (like we always do, we just love helping!) to find the best of the best fitness apps. So sit back, relax and scroll your way into becoming fit:

Lose it
We love this app because it consolidates your food diary and work out journal into one handy tracker. We really needed this app when we saw the extensive food library including name brand products and that it provides an accurate nutritional fact list for each. Even better then that, the app is free.

Good Food Near You
Okay so this app doesn’t track your fitness, but it can update you on the best healthy food closest to you using a GPS locator. The app targets various types of food establishments to give you a wide range of options for eating, all including the nutritional facts.

IFitness
While it’s gonna set you back $1.99, we just cant help but love it. The app offers 230 exercises sorted by body regions and also includes 100 instructional videos for your viewing pleasure. It also includes preset routines that require nothing but physical effort from you so you can step away from the pricey trainer and do it yourself!

C25K
The app whose full name is Couch to 5k, which we think is appropriate is for those new to the workout world. The app consists of a nine-week jogging regimen designed to help improve your endurance and fitness over time.

MyFitnessPal
We really love this one! It tracks your workout time along with your caloric intake to determine how many calories you are burning a day. Another great feature is you can sync it up with friends to attain your workout goals together.

Hopefully you will find one of these awesome apps fitting to your lifestyle! While you are perusing your smart phone be sure to check out our website for our full line of health supplements.

HOW TO: Boost Your Immune System

While your body does a remarkable job of protecting you from outside diseases and germs, it cannot protect you from everything. It is vital to consider every possible way to help your body and so here we present the best way we can help you, help your body. Be sure to not only consider these tips when you are feeling under the weather but at all times to be the best you.

Adopt Healthy Living Strategies
For most, this should be a no brainer but sometimes we may not realize how much some of our favorite vices are actually harming us. The list of conscious living includes but is not limited to: Not smoking, eating your fruits and veggies and exercising regularly. This also includes drinking. Alcohol is considered a toxin, which destroys your positive cells. By cutting down to two drinks or less a week, you are not only increasing your immune system but you are living a healthy life.

Stress
Take the time to distress so you can really let yourself heal by properly resting and giving yourself time to you. It has been scientifically proven that stress suppresses the work of your T-cells, which are a vital component in healthy living.

Eat Healthy
This deserves a new category all together; you really are what you eat. Be sure to stock up on vitamin rich health foods, such as Kale, to help your immune system.

Use Supplements
We know, we love to promote supplements but seriously…. they work. Supplements provide that extra boost your body needs that it may not be getting from your daily diet.

Exercise
Exercising creates and boosts your immunity to bacteria and diseases because its keeps your cardiovascular system strong and in shape. Not only that, it keeps your body weight and blood pressure low.
